SAMe Supplements: An Effective Solution for Depression

Saturday, 21 Dec 2013 06:13 PM

SAMe, stands for S-adenosyl-L-methionine. It is a chemical found naturally in the body, and is produced from methionine amino acid and energy-producing compound adenosine triphosphate. Mainly present in the brain, the adrenal glands and the liver cells, SAMe is crucial in production of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters.

SAMe supplements increase serotonin levels in the brain and relieve the symptoms of depression. SAMe supplements have been used as dietary supplements and as a prescription drug in the U.S., Spain and Germany. Some patients take these supplements for depression and joint pain. For depression, a dosage of 400 to 1,600 milligrams per day is usually recommended. "The American Journal of Psychiatry" research shows considerable remission of depression symptoms in about 26 percent of the patients given SAMe supplements. Other researches show that taking vitamins B6 and B12 in combination with SAMe supplements works better.

The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database has found SAMe to be effective in depression and osteoarthritis. SAMe supplements can be useful in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, fibromyalgia, heart disease, anxiety neurosis, migraines, and premenstrual syndrome. These supplements can be taken by those whom the traditional antidepressant medicines such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), don’t suit or don’t give desired results. Still, it is recommended to take SAMe supplements under the supervision of a doctor.

SAMe supplements are largely safer than other products for depression, yet nausea, headache, dry mouth, and constipation have been sometimes noticed. These symptoms can be the result of higher doses of the supplements. However, SAMe supplements have not shown any associated side effects such as sexual dysfunction and weight gain as exhibited upon taking other conventional antidepressant drugs. Though SAMe supplements may relieve the symptoms associated with depression and elevate the mood, they should be avoided in bipolar depression and Parkinson’s disease. In these conditions, SAMe supplements may induce the symptoms of aggression or mania. Some precautions should be taken while on these supplements; they should not be given to the breastfeeding mothers and to patients undergoing any major surgery. Indeed, further research in this field is needed.
