Prevent Muscle Aches: The Side Effect of Statin Drugs with CoQ10

Thursday, 09 January 2014 02:11 AM EST

Cardiovascular diseases are rising and statin drugs play a key role in managing them. People with high cholesterol are prescribed statin drugs to reduce or prevent the risk of heart attack or stroke. Until normal cholesterol levels are achieved, they continue taking statin drugs. This makes the side effects of statin drugs difficult to manage.

Many side effects like muscle aches, increased risk for angina pectoris, etc. are associated with the use of statin drugs. Some people show knee pain or worsening of already existing pain as a side effect. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency also lists knee pain as one of the possible side effects of statins. Knee pain is more linked with atorvastatin and fluvastatin drugs, and the pain resolves when the statin drugs are stopped for two weeks. However, pain in the knee is considered as a rare side effect of statin drugs in medical practice. British National Formulary does not indicate knee pain as a side effect of statin drugs. Since statin drugs are prescribed to adults, the symptom of knee pain is often attributed to age-related degeneration by researchers. More research is needed to enlist knee pain as a possible side effect of statin drugs.

Statin drugs are used to prevent heart problems and increased cholesterol. Many studies prove that statin drugs prevent heart diseases and stroke by 40 percent. Some studies show that statin drugs and other prescribed drugs may react to produce muscle ache. Many people stop statin drugs due to unbearable muscle ache. It is possible to reduce chances of muscle ache by consulting a doctor and have a change in medication.

Muscle ache occurs as statin drugs block CoQ10. CoQ10 is a coenzyme that is naturally made in our body. It is a fat-soluble antioxidant. CoQ10 is a cofactor for mitochondrial energy production and prevents myalgia. It is available as a supplement in capsule form. CoQ10 supplements help prevent muscle ache. Research on the role of CoQ10 supplements to prevent statin drugs-induced muscle aches is still ongoing. Research has proven that CoQ10 works in two ways: it is as an excellent supplement to prevent muscle ache and it also helps reduce LDL. So using CoQ10 with statin drugs has double benefits. However, there are many other factors that CoQ10 cannot control. Hence, using CoQ10 to prevent muscle ache due to statin drugs does not benefit all patients.
