Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments of Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases

Monday, 14 Apr 2014 12:29 AM

Pelvic inflammatory diseases are commonly known as PID. They are sexually transmitted diseases that occur in the female reproductive organs. These diseases damage the fallopian tubes, uterus, and different parts of the female reproductive organs irreversibly. Pelvic inflammatory diseases are also the main causes of infertility in women.

Knowing about these diseases and their causes can help women recognize when they are suffering from pelvic inflammatory diseases. The symptoms of pelvic inflammatory diseases include:
  • Pain while urinating is one of the first symptoms that should be investigated for treatment
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Vaginal discharge with an unusual odor, or yellow-green in color is one of the symptoms that needs to be examined for treatment
  • High fever and chills accompanied by one of the other symptoms should also be thoroughly examined for treatment
  • Pain in the stomach region and lower and upper right abdomen area is another one of the symptoms
  • Pain during sexual activities is one of the symptoms
Any woman suffering from one or more of these symptoms should contact her doctor at the earliest to start with appropriate treatment.

The causes for pelvic inflammatory diseases are many. Usually, the bacteria are prevented from entering the internal organs of a woman by the cervix. When the cervix is exposed, the chances of contacting this disease are easy. During sexual activities, the cervix of a woman is exposed and that causes transmission of diseases from the man to the woman. If the man is suffering from diseases like chlamydia or gonorrhea, it causes the cervix to get infected. Once this happens, the cervix becomes incapable of preventing the bacteria from entering the internal organs of the woman. Once these bacteria transfer from the cervix to the upper genital tract in the woman, it causes pelvic inflammatory diseases. Other causes of these diseases are childbirth, abortion, and procedures done in the pelvic region.

The treatment plans for pelvic inflammatory diseases are quite a few. If the patient fails to recover from the symptoms within 72 hours, then the doctor should consider laparoscopy or other surgical procedures. There are also chances of the patient being misdiagnosed. With the administration of antibiotics, improvement can be expected in the patient.

If the patient wishes to maintain her fertility, laparoscopy is the best treatment option that can be followed. This procedure is also followed in cases of surgical emergencies.

The three treatment options in surgical procedures are hysterectomy, unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The surgeries are usually performed after the inflammation and infection have been taken care of. Patients who suffer from recurring pelvic inflammatory diseases will suffer because surgery as a treatment option will be rendered difficult due to the dense adhesions in the pelvic region.
