Smucker's Recalls Peanut Butter

Friday, 18 November 2011 03:09 PM EST

Certain 16-ounce jars of Smucker's peanut butter are being recalled over salmonella fears, the Ohio-based company announced.

"No illnesses related to this issue have been reported and the product is being recalled out of an abundance of caution for consumer safety," the J.M.
Smucker Company said in a press release.

Some 3,000 jars are being removed from stores, plus another 16,000 are being recalled that never left warehouses, the company says. A routine sampling of products revealed the possibility of salmonella contamination.

Affected jars of Natural Peanut Butter Chunky have "Best if used by" dates of August 3, 2012 and August 4, 2012, plus production codes 1307004 and 1308004. Consumers with these products are advised to discard the jar and call Smucker's at 1-888-550-9555 for a replacement coupon.

The product was distributed in Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

Symptoms of salmonella include fever, cramps and diarrhea that can last for several days. Hospitalization may be required for older people and those with compromised immune systems.
