Craisins Recalled for Metal Fragments

Monday, 28 Nov 2011 11:36 PM

Ocean Spray is recalling its sweetened, dried cranberries due to possible contamination with small, hairlike metal particles. The company announced the recall the day after Thanksgiving.

Produce affected are 5-ounce, 10-ounce, and 48-ounce packages of Craisins, plus 10-pound bulk packages. All of the recalled products have the letter “M” following “Best By” dates on the packaging.

No injuries have been reported, officials said. An equipment malfunction is responsible for the stray metal pieces, they said, and the problem has been fixed.

Company spokesman John Isaf said a “very small” percentage of the product’s annual production was recalled – an estimated 150,000 pounds based on a 60-million-pound yearly goal.

Ocean Spray urges consumers to save the UPC code and “Best By” dates, destroy the product, and contact the firm’s consumer hotline at 1-800-662-3263 for a coupon replacement.
