Common Signs of Perimenopause

Monday, 14 April 2014 12:09 AM

Women’s reproductive life has a stage around the age of 50, when the ovaries gradually cease producing estrogen hormone and menstrual periods stop. This stage is called menopause. The period preceding menopause, in women in their 40s is when changes in hormone levels cause signs of night sweats, irregular periods, tenderness of the breasts, fatigue, and loss to libido appear. These occur due to reduced estrogen hormone production, with the stage being called perimenopause. The symptoms of night sweats and sleep disturbances can begin several years before actual menopause. In all these years, women exhibit signs and symptoms caused by the ovaries’ reduced production of the estrogen hormone and in turn cause signs such as irregular periods. All of these occur in the perimenopause stage of a woman’s reproductive life. Let us examine the most common signs and symptoms of perimenopause.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Perimenopause

Irregular periods, tenderness of the breasts, severe premenstrual symptoms, urinary incontinence, night sweats, problems in falling asleep or sleeplessness, fatigue, and mood swings are among the top signs and symptoms of perimenopause. These symptoms occur mainly because the ovaries in women over the age of 40 start producing less estrogen hormone. Reduced production of the estrogen hormone at this age causes the early signs of menopause in the perimenopause stage.

The chief various signs and symptoms of perimenopause caused mainly due to reduced estrogen hormone levels are:
  • Night sweats are among the most common symptoms: During perimenopause, women face sudden increase in body heat, hot flushes, and sweating. Signs of hot flushes can cause night sweats. Profuse sweating can occur in the face, forehead, neck, and chest even during rest. Apart from excessive heat, night sweats also cause an increase in the heart rate.
  • Irregular or erratic menstrual cycle: Due to the reduced levels of the estrogen hormone in the perimenopause stage, the menstrual cycle of women in the perimenopause age group becomes irregular. Perimenopause symptoms include irregular periods, abnormal vaginal bleeding, and worsening premenstrual signs.
  • Vaginal changes: Women in the stage of perimenopause encounter signs of vaginal dryness and discomfort due to lower levels of the hormone estrogen. This can cause difficulty or lowered interest in sex. In the perimenopause stage, women can even face vaginal atrophy, with discomfort or dryness in the vagina combined with painful sex.
  • Symptoms related to sleep: Perimenopause causes symptoms of night sweats, but it also causes other sleep problems. Signs of anxiety also accompany insomnia and night sweats. These symptoms combine to create tiredness and result in a lack of concentration and interest in work.
  • Urinary complaints: Signs of urinary incontinence also appear in the age when women have reduced levels of the estrogen hormone, as they approach menopause. Urinary infections are among common symptoms, along with the lowered control on bladder muscles.
Other common signs and symptoms of perimenopause include loss of libido, fatigue, mood swings, weight gain, and short-term memory loss.
