Natural Treatment for Autism

Autism is a genetic disorder that results in hampered brain development in children. This developmental disability can be noticed as lacks of prominent behavioral and communication ability in a child. Autism is usually identified through symptoms in early years of growth, i.e., one to three years. This is a chronic developmental disability in a child’s ability to communicate and socialize. Even though appropriate conventional medical treatment, alternative treatment, or natural treatment can have positive effects on a child’s behavior and skills, a complete and permanent solution or treatment is yet to be found.

Autism spectrum disorder or autism is a demanding disease in terms of money, energy, and effort. Moreover, the parents of an autism-affected child needs loads of patience to deal with the situation and to inculcate positive behaviour in the child. This disease affects the life of the child and its entire family. Conventional medical treatment offers prescribed drugs to bring about required brain development but this form of treatment is risky. Drugs cannot be used for prolonged periods as a risk of side effects remains. Apart from this, using conventional medical treatment options can be too expensive for some families. Therefore, alternate treatment or natural treatment options can be explored.
Alternate treatments for this developmental disease refers to the use of natural products, lifestyle changes and nonpervasive therapies for creating a change in perception, behavior, communication, and socializing abilities of the affected child. Do remember that all natural treatments or alternate treatment methods take longer to show significant effects. In addition, no rigorous studies have been done to prove the effectiveness of natural treatments. However, they can be safely tried as they do not have side effects.
Melatonin is a sleep inducer present in the blood of which patients of autism have lower levels. This causes insomnia to be a regular complaint of children with autism. With alternative treatment supplements offering adequate intake of melatonin or upon administering a prescribed dose at regular intervals, melatonin helps induce sleep. Regular use can correct the sleep cycle. With a better night’s sleep, the behavior improves and the child is less aggressive during the daytime.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for adequate brain development. The compound is found to be lacking in children with autism. Providing omega-3 fatty acids in the diet or as tablets can be an effective way to enhance brain development. Regular dosage of the prescribed amount has been shown to improve concentration, communication, understanding, and overall behavior.

The doctor’s advice is important for alternative treatment of autism using melatonin and omega-3 fatty acids. Self-medication should be restricted and only prescribed supplements administered in mandatory doses. These natural treatments cannot work in isolation and have to be combined with conventional medical treatment medication prescribed by the doctor.
A gluten-free diet improves symptoms in autism-affected children. An alternative treatment supports a casein-free diet. For both the above diet plans, a proper child nutritionist or dietician should be consulted and the mix of diets suggested by the expert used. This is important because all food containing gluten and casein must also contain other necessary dietary elements required by the body.

Weak immunity and gastric trouble is common among children with autism. Probiotics improve the functioning of the digestive system while multivitamins strengthen the immune system. In combination with these alternate treatments, addressing major health issues causes positive behavioral changes in the child and there are less complications present for the child as well as the parents.

Children with this developmental disability lack the ability to face the stress placed by regular schooling. Therefore, special schools, therapists, and behavior trainers are another natural treatment to consider. This alternate treatment can be combined with conventional medical treatment. This definitely does not have any negative side effects.

All the aforementioned natural treatments address developmental disabilities of the child. The alternate methods are not a final cure but are effective to enhance skills and bring positive changes in the child’s behavior. Side effects are not a major concern while using these alternate treatments options, but a doctor’s guidance is still needed. Even though natural treatments are safe, children’s health cannot be a subject for experimentation. Each child with this developmental disability has different needs and responds differently to the combination of various conventional medical treatments and natural treatments.
