Managing Migraine Headache with Natural and Safe Treatments

Saturday, 21 December 2013 04:36 PM

Migraine headache is very irritating and disabling disease characterized by recurrent and mostly one-sided headache associated with nausea. Painkillers have been prescribed to manage the pain but many natural treatments are available that are safe and effective. There is a need to promote and adapt these safe treatment options to manage the pain in migraine.

Acupuncture is the most common, natural, and safe therapy practiced in China. Chinese practitioners consider many meridians in the body where energy flows. Headache due to migraine is caused by energy being blocked in certain meridians. In this therapy, very fine metallic needles are inserted at certain points in the body to unblock the restricted energy. It is a very safe and effective pain management therapy for many diseases including migraine headache. It releases chemicals from the brain, which may help in reduction of pain or elevation of pain threshold of the migraine patient.

Diet plays an important role in managing migraine headache. Riboflavin or vitamin B2 is widely accepted as the best food for preventing migraines. It reduces oxidative stress in the cells and is available in very common natural food items like low-fat milk, green leafy vegetables, almonds, mushrooms, broccoli, and spinach. A dose of 400 milligrams per day for three months is generally recommended. It is very safe even if you consume such natural food stuff in excess.

Biofeedback therapy is a very effective natural treatment option, where we train our mind and body for bearing the pain. It is done by reducing the stress, by knowing the changes that occur in our mind and body while we suffer pain. Many sensors giving information or feedback about skin temperature, muscle tension, brain waves, and pulse are used in this treatment. The person, after knowing the effect of stress on his mind and body, works towards reducing the stress. In many cases, it reduces the severity and frequency of the pain.
A gentle massage over the shoulders, back, and head area can help relieve pain during a migraine attack as well as prevent it. It relieves the muscle tension and gives them strength, too. Massage increases the circulation. Many herbal oils with eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, sandalwood, etc., are effective for the same purpose.

Many migraine patients with a prolonged history of headache have underlying stress, depression, or anxiety as the trigger. Stress management through yoga, exercise, meditation, etc. is an effective and safe way of managing chronic headache.
