Loss of Sex Drive: What Causes Loss of Libido?

Sunday, 05 January 2014 02:18 AM EST

Usually loss of libido occurs due to a deficiency in testosterone levels, which may vary from person to person. Women suffer from sexual dysfunction more commonly than men do. Loss of sexual desire or low sex drive (libido) leads the sufferer to feel less or no pleasure during sex, and the person is likely to be less interested in sex with the frequency of sexual acts being lower. This is also termed hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). There are plenty of reasons for its existence. Testosterone is mainly responsible for HSDD or loss of libido/low desire. Let us examine the various causes of low desire for sex or a sex drive loss. After all, the loss of libido is not a normal condition in life. Various options to regain the sex drive are available through the efficient addition of testosterone and through various other therapies. However, as the saying goes, “There is no solution possible till the problem is identified.” So, let us examine some reasons for the loss of libido.

Male sex hormones like androgen and sex steroids including testosterone play a preeminent role in the sex drive for both men and women. Studies have found a deficient androgen or testosterone level and an excess of prolactin hormone in men and women to cause low desire or loss of sex drive.

Around 15 to 16 percent of men are affected by the HSDD sexual dysfunction due to low testosterone production. Psychological factors like stress, unavailability of privacy or deprived intimacy in relations might cause a reduction in libido. This usually happens when there is a mismatch between the partners or when the level of sexual urge varies in the two, which affects the sex drive. Physical factors like being underweight or overweight can also cause a low desire for physical intimacy. Addictions like smoking and alcohol or substance abuse can create an imbalance of hormones, which causes loss of libido. Age is another strong killer of sex drive in men. Aging causes testosterone production in men to decline, which in turn leads to low desire for sex.

Loss of sex drive is more common in women and nearly a third of women between ages 18–59 suffer from low desire. The causes of HSDD in women may include physical causes like anemia, especially during their menstrual periods, and alcoholism, and diseases like diabetes. Many women also suffer from low libido after childbirth because hormonal changes can lower testosterone levels. Overmedication on various oral contraceptives or tranquilizers can also cause low desire for sex by elevating the levels of sex hormone binding globulin and affecting testosterone.

Psychological factors like a past sexual assault/rape, stress, childhood hangups, depression or mental disorders, or serious relationship problems act as sex-drive or libido killers for women. An unequal or mismatched sexual relationship between the partners can influence desire significantly, causing low desire for intimacy in women.

These factors for low desire for intimacy can be fixed through relationship management and medical help. You can identify the reason for the loss of sex drive, boost your testosterone and sex drive to keep intimacy intact!
