Signs and Symptoms of an Immune Deficiency

By    |   Friday, 21 Aug 2015 09:36 PM

A variety of signs and symptoms indicate immune deficiency. The symptoms occur when the immune system doesn’t function properly because of genetic or environmental factors that affect the body’s cells.

White blood cells in the immune system normally protect and defend the body against invaders such as bacteria and germs. These cells vanish or don’t work properly in those with immune deficiency.

People born with immune deficiency as the result of heredity or genetics have primary immunodeficiency disease, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Other cases are known as secondary immune deficiency disease. This can arise from such external conditions as chemotherapy treatment, malnutrition, severe burns or HIV.

Immune deficiency can lead to repeated infections. Recurrent sinus and lung infections may be the first indication of a deficiency, The Merck Manual noted. Sore throats or head colds may recur and then lead to such conditions as pneumonia.

Digestive and staph infections are among the many symptoms. Infections of the mouth or eyes are common. Thrush, a fungal infection of the mouth, could suggest a symptom of immune deficiency. Other infections include sores in the mouth, chronic gum disease, ear or skin infections, and numerous warts resulting from viruses.

Fever, chills, or abdominal pain could cause a loss of appetite and weight because of an immune deficiency.

Infants and young children with immune deficiency could suffer from chronic diarrhea, though this can occur in adults as well. The immune deficiency causes infections or overgrowth of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, National Jewish Health reported. Delayed growth may result from immune deficiencies in young children.

Other symptoms of an immune deficiency include inflammation and infection of internal organs, blood disorders that lead to anemia, and autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes and lupus, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Alert: 9 Signs Your Immune System Is Dysfunctional

Signs vary among people with an immune deficiency. Symptoms might go unnoticed for years, but doctors often diagnose the problem when infections develop in infants. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent long-term problems and can help people with the disorder lead normal lives.
