Study: Why Women see Cads as Good Dads

Nice guys may indeed finish last, at least when it comes to the views of women who are ovulating.
That’s the provocative conclusion of a new study out of the University of Texas at San Antonio that found women may perceive “sexy cads as good dads” in the week before ovulation.
Lead Researcher Kristina Durante, with the UTSA College of Business, found female hormones may influence women's perceptions of men as potential fathers.
"Previous research has shown in the week near ovulation women become attracted to sexy, rebellious and handsome men like George Clooney or James Bond," said Durante. "But until now it was unclear why women would ever think it's wise to pursue long-term relationships with these kinds of men."
For the research, women viewed online dating profiles of either “sexy” or “reliable" men during periods of both high and low fertility. Participants were asked whether they felt the men were likely to be caring fathers, shop for food, cook and contribute to household chores. Women near ovulation tended to say the sexy men would be better dads.
"Under the hormonal influence of ovulation, women delude themselves into thinking that the sexy bad boys will become devoted partners and better dads," explained Durante. "When looking at the sexy cad through ovulation goggles, Mr. Wrong looked exactly like Mr. Right."
The article -- "Ovulation Leads Women to Perceive Sexy Cads as Good Dads" -- was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
