Ginseng — a natural root found in cool climates — has been used for many centuries as a supplement to strengthen the immune system and boost overall health. It has a number of pharmacological benefits; it boosts health by helping manage diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and erectile dysfunction in men, menstrual problems and menopausal symptoms in women. Furthermore, ginseng has properties that boost immunity. Ginseng supplements improve health, in that they help maintain homeostasis of the immune system and treat cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.
 
Ginseng supplements boost health of immune system by building up resistance to illness and microbial attacks. A recent study published in the Journal of Ginseng Research noted that ginseng exhibited beneficial effects in controlling inflammatory diseases and microbial infections by boosting immune system health. The study says that ginseng supplements influence and control different types of cells of the immune system such as killer cells, T cells, macrophages, dendritic cells, and B cells.

 Another study in the journal reported the effectiveness of ginseng supplements in boosting health of the immune system components in bronchi, as needed in congestive lung disease. The study says that ginseng supplements probably have an impact on the body’s stress response mechanism in addition to boosting the immune system.  
 
There are two popular varieties of ginseng supplements — the Asian variety and the American variety. Though these two types of ginseng have been known to have similar health-boosting effects, the Asian variety is said to be stronger and powerful. In addition, white ginseng is made by drying the ginseng root, whereas red ginseng is made by boiling and conditioning the ginseng root before drying. Red ginseng has properties that boost health of various organs and immune system with fewer side effects.
 
Mild side effects such as insomnia, allergy, and irritation have been observed in the people who took ginseng supplements. Doctors recommend ginseng supplements to boost health and the functioning of the immune system but only for a short duration. At times, you may be asked to temporarily stop taking ginseng supplements. These supplements can interact with medications prescribed for other health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, and liver diseases. You should, therefore, consult your doctor before taking the supplements if you wish to boost the health of your immune system.
