Gamma interferon therapy is believed to help some patients struggling with chronic infections. Many scientific studies have looked at the effectiveness of this therapy to help specific immunodeficiency diseases.

The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine describes interferons as “a substance that is produced upon the stimulation of cells by viruses, that has the ability to protect cells from infection with viruses of any kind.”

Therapeutically, that means that interferons are believed to help fight viral infections. The treatment has also been looked at as a tumor fighter. Interferons include three subtypes; alpha, beta and gamma. Interferon gamma, which is also known as type II interferon, has a “unique amino acid sequence” that can help regulate the immune system, according to Davidson College. These cells have been shown to have an anti-viral effect as well as an anti-tumor effect.

Researchers have introduced an influx of drugs targeted toward this kind of therapy for patients with immune system disorders, according to a 2008 a study.

Scientific research has shown some promising results for patients. A study of gamma interferon treatment published in 1999 in the Journal of Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology showed patients struggling with the inherited immunodeficiency disease chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) saw a reduction in infections through the therapy.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved to use of interferon gamma-1b on the market under the name Actimmune. This drug can be used to treat chronic granlomatous disease or osteopetrosis.
