Energy Drinks Improve Heart Function

They may take a hit from health experts for their high sugar and caffeine content, but energy drinks have been found to have a positive effect on heart function and performance, according to new research.
At a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology this week, scientists from University of Siena presented the results of a study involving 35 young men whose heart function, pulse and blood pressure were assessed after consuming energy drinks containing caffeine and taurine.
Echocardiograms of the men’s hearts taken before and one hour after consumption showed the drinks increased men’s heart rates and blood pressure, and resulted in improved heart function.

"Taken together these results show that energy drinks enhance contractions of both the left and right ventricles, thereby delivering a positive effect on myocardial function," said lead researcher Dr. Matteo Cameli.
"Our study was performed in young healthy individuals at rest. Future studies need to focus on whether such benefits persist after long term consumption of energy drinks, and what the effects are of consuming these drinks during physical activity. It will also be important to determine which of the effects are induced in patients with cardiac disease to further our understanding of the potential benefits or risks of energy drink consumption."
