Early Warning Signs of Glaucoma

Monday, 10 Mar 2014 01:52 AM

Glaucoma is an eye disorder affecting the optic nerve cells. If not treated, glaucoma can also cause loss of vision. There are two types of glaucoma: primary open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Patients of glaucoma reveal different types of signs and symptoms. Diabetes, history of eye injury, high intraocular pressure, myopia, and high blood pressure are some risk factors associated with glaucoma. Patients should visit the doctor for proper diagnosis and possible treatments like eye drops, surgery, or both.

Causes of Glaucoma

Inability of eyes to drain fluid efficiently may be among the causes of glaucoma. Elevated eye pressure may be among the associated signs causing the disorder. Inflammation of the eye, eye injury, pigment dispersion, usage of steroid containing medications, and formation of abnormal blood vessel can be some signs and symptoms causing glaucoma. Age, nearsightedness, steroid use, severe anemia, thin cornea, and elevated eye pressure are also some associated risk factors.

Signs and Symptoms of Glaucoma

Patients suffering from open-angle glaucoma usually do not experience any early warning signs. When they become aware of the signs associated with this disorder, it is already in the advanced stage. It develops slowly and is usually unnoticeable, leading to loss of vision for several years. Presence of some early warning signs as listed below can help in diagnosing the disorder. It is advisable to get the eye examined by a doctor if some early warning signs appear. Some signs and symptoms include:
  • Blurred vision
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Sudden loss of sight
  • Severe pain in the head and eye
  • Seeing rainbows around light
The above symptoms may not necessarily indicate this disorder but if patients suffer from any of these symptoms, they should contact their doctor. Other symptoms include redness of the eye, pain in the eye, haziness in eye, etc. If the eye is not tested on a regular basis, early symptoms that arise can include permanent holes in the vision. It has been found that half of the patients of glaucoma are not even aware of the associated symptoms. Some patients may not suffer from any signs and symptoms but may still experience high eye pressure.
