Lifestyle Changes That Can Ease Diabetes

By    |   Monday, 20 July 2015 05:26 PM EDT

There are several lifestyle changes that can prove helpful in easing the symptoms of diabetes and helping those with such a diagnosis live fuller and healthier lives.

Diabetes ranks as the fifth leading killer of Americans with more than 70,000 deaths each year due to the disease.

Among the recommendations for improving life with diabetes are changes in eating habits that can help to regulate insulin in your system. WebMD recommends choosing complex carbohydrates that burn more efficiently in your body and the right balance of carbohydrates in each meal. Working with a dietitian can help a patient create just the right mix in their diet.

Losing weight is also crucial. Even a small amount can have an effect on insulin levels, WebMD noted, adding that such a loss will "help lower your blood sugar and improve your blood pressure and blood fats. You'll also have more energy."

Becoming more active with plenty of aerobic activity regulates stress, helps insulin support your body and enhances blood flow, the American Diabetes Association said.

“For most people, it’s best to aim for a total of 30 minutes a day, at least five days a week,” the organization said.

Paying more attention to your healthcare needs is also crucial. Regular doctor visits, blood sugar testing and taking prescribed medications can keep diabetes under control. The Mayo Clinic also pointed out the importance of coordinating medication with meals to manage blood sugar levels.

Those with diabetes also are encouraged to quit smoking, avoid sugar-sweetened beverages, limit alcohol consumption and manage stress.

Support from loved ones as you manage your disease is also important, the American Diabetes Association noted.

“You want the people around you to know how to help, but it’s also okay to tell them if you don’t want their help,” the organization said.
