Eating Dessert First May Help Diet: Study

Here’s some sweet news for people who are dieting to lose weight: New research has found some people who eat dessert first are better able to control, and maintain, a healthy diet – boosting their odds of losing weight and keeping the pounds off.
The findings, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, indicate having a sweet treat before a meal appears to boost the willpower to avoid unhealthy foods, and may make dieters less likely to overindulge later on cookies and candies.
In a series of studies, researchers Joseph P. Redden of the University of Minnesota and Kelly L. Haws of Texas A&M University found people who successfully control their diets eat fewer unhealthy foods because they are satisfied sooner.
They also found study participants asked to count how many times they swallowed while eating were satisfied more quickly, even if they had a low level of self-control. Monitoring how much they ate made them behave like those with higher levels of self-control.
In addition, the results showed people with poor self-control had greater willpower if they paid close attention to the quantities of unhealthy foods they consumed because simply paying attention made them more quickly satisfied.
"Although self-control is typically viewed as a battle between willpower and desire, consumers can't rely entirely on willpower to control their eating,” they researchers wrote. “They also need to create situations that will make them lose interest in food. One way is to keep better track of the quantity of unhealthy foods they eat."
They added: "Dieters should focus on the quantity of unhealthy foods but not the quantity of healthy foods. Monitoring healthy foods could actually be counterproductive to the goal of eating a healthier diet. So the secret to success is knowing when to monitor your eating."
