New Breast Cancer Test Developed

Canadian researchers have developed a new breast and ovarian cancer gene test that offers women a faster, more accurate, and lower-cost assessment of their risk of developing the diseases than existing methods.
The development, reported in the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, marks a significant improvement in diagnostic techniques over current genetic testing methods that identify individuals with mutations in genes known as BRCA1 and BRCA2 – linked to breast and ovarian cancers.
Researchers with the Fred A. Litwin Centre for Cancer Genetics in Toronto noted women at risk have been seeking genetic testing and counseling for years, but the standard method is labor-intensive, costly, and it only targets a part of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

But the new technique is more effective, cheaper and takes less time.
"A comprehensive understanding of BRCA1/2 genotypes … is needed to establish targeted therapies," said lead researcher Hilmi Ozcelik. "Recent studies have suggested that certain chemical inhibitors are effective for the treatment of breast cancer in patients with BRCA1/2 mutations.
“Therefore, availability of new, affordable, and comprehensive technologies to screen for these mutations will be critical to identify patient-candidates for targeted therapies."
The researchers combined the use of two techniques – called long range PCR and next generation sequencing – to analyze the DNA of 12 breast cancer patients. The new method quickly and successfully identified all of the expected genetic mutations in the patients, without any false-positives, confirming the technique’s accuracy.
