Wednesday, 02 April 2014 09:42 PM

Menopause is considered a transition stage where the reproductive ability of women ceases. In menopause, menses stops due to changes in the hormones in the body. Loss of the estrogen hormone is linked with many symptoms. This hormone can affect the bones, heart, breasts, uterus, skin, and brain. Menopause is associated with many symptoms like hot flashes, irritability, fatigue, and night sweats, which need management by experts. Many women find loss of libido, dryness in the vagina, and disrupted sleep as disturbing menopause symptoms. Loss of the testosterone hormone in women causes a decrease in libido. Interestingly, many women in menopause complain of no such symptoms.

To treat these symptoms of menopause, natural remedies are often preferred over hormone replacement treatment. Many natural remedies like black cohosh are used instead of synthetic hormone preparations. Hair loss, weight gain, and mood swings are symptoms that women seek to manage with natural remedies without going in for synthetic hormone management therapies.
Black cohosh, botanically known as Actaea recemosa, is an effective natural treatment for menopause. Many remedies that include black cohosh are getting popular to manage menopause symptoms. Black cohosh is commonly known as black snake root. The powder and tincture of black cohosh root are used medicinally in herbal treatment. Scientific evidence for treatment with black cohosh is not available, but symptoms do improve with it. Apart from reducing hot flashes, black cohosh remedies have been used for pain relief, sleep problems, and swellings as well.
Many supplements of black cohosh on the market are available in tablet, capsule, and liquid dosage forms. These non-hormone treatments of menopause are free from side effects and hence are preferred by a large majority of women. Black cohosh and other natural remedies are best taken under medical supervision as long-term use may cause some untoward symptoms. It is a well-known fact that hormone replacement treatments are linked with heart diseases, blood clots, and stroke. Some other natural remedies like ginseng and evening primrose oil, etc. are also effective in managing menopause effects. Ginseng is a safe natural alternative to hormone preparations, helping in mood swings and sleep disturbances. Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is another popular and effective natural remedy for menopause symptoms.
Natural management of menopause symptoms should always to be done with help from a health care provider, as one may suffer many other medical illnesses during this stage. Apart from natural herbs like black cohosh and ginseng, other measures like exercise, healthy diet, and stress management are also to be considered for managing menopause symptoms.
