Symptoms of bipolar disorder vary depending on the type of disorder (depression or mania) and vary from person to person. Symptoms of depression may include insomnia, sadness, hopelessness, and extreme weight loss or weight gain. Anxiety, fatigue, tiredness, a feeling of guilt, underperformance at work, and irritation may be some other symptoms of depression. Mood stabilizers are effective treatments used to avoid mood swings. Medications may include Symbyax, lithium, and benzodiazepines. The patients of bipolar disorder can take antidepressants, and visiting the psychiatrists may be helpful. If medications are not effective, other treatments like electroconvulsive therapy can be used. This therapy is beneficial for both mania and depression treatments. Hospitalization may be required as one of the treatments for cases of severe depression and anxiety. Certain treatments can recommend making changes in lifestyle. Exercising, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep can be beneficial treatments.

Psychotherapy can be an important part of the treatment process. Counseling from friends and family can benefit the patients significantly. Treatments like talk therapy with a mental health practitioner and involvement of family members in the treatments can also reduce symptoms of bipolar disorder.
