Studies tie Avocados to Health

Avocados aren’t usually the first vegetable that springs to mind when most people think of health foods. But several new scientific studies have linked avocado consumption to heart health, better weight management, a lower risk for type 2 diabetes and healthy lifestyles.
The studies, presented at the Experimental Biology Conference in San Diego last week, included the following findings by leading nutrition researchers:
• University of California-Los Angeles researchers found the primary type of beneficial monounsaturated fat found in avocados has a positive impact on weight management, type 2 diabetes, blood cholesterol and metabolism. "Monounsaturated fats and their natural sources are becoming increasingly important for good nutrition," said lead researcher Dr. David Heber. "Foods such as … avocados, nuts and seeds should be included on the shopping lists of health-conscious consumers as scientists are recognizing that these fats contribute taste and variety, as well as health benefits to the diet."
• Heber also reported UCLA researchers found adding one-half of an avocado to a hamburger may reduce inflammation and have significant antioxidant effects that may lower cardiovascular risks. "
• Dr. Steven Schwartz, a “functional foods” specialist at Ohio State University, reported carotenoids (specifically beta-carotene) in foods are better absorbed into the body when eaten in combination with avocados. "Our initial findings show that a greater level of carotenoids from a novel high beta-carotene tomato variety are absorbed and converted to vitamin A when consumed with …avocados compared to no avocados," said Schwartz. "[They] seem to have a natural ability to boost the body's absorption, conversion and delivery of more nutrients."
• Researchers at Loma Linda University found adding one-half of an avocado per day to one's diet helps regulate appetite and blood sugar, and boost metabolism. "Our findings show that the inclusion or addition of …avocado to a meal influences post meal leptin responses over a three hour period,” said Dr. Joan Sabaté. "Leptin is hormone that plays a key role in regulating food intake and energy expenditure via appetite and metabolism."
