Cell Phones Affect Brain Activity

Tuesday, 04 October 2011 09:56 AM EDT

While study results were inconclusive as to whether cell phones are bad for you, researchers found that our on-the-go phones do alter brain activity in the area closest to the phone’s antenna.
Electromagnetic radiation, although weak, increases glucose metabolism, which is a sign of brain activity. But does this lead to cancer?
The National Institutes of Health says the study neither confirms nor denies it. However, Dr. Nora Volkow of the NIH says she’s switched to an ear phone instead of holding the phone to her ear.
“I don’t say there is any risk, but in case there is, why not?” she says.
If you want to be safer than sorrier, try:
• Texting instead of talking
• Using the speaker
• Wearing a Bluetooth earpiece
• Buying a phone that emits less radiation. Check www.ewg.org for a list
