Apple Peel Compound Burns Fat

An apple a day may indeed keep the doctor away, according to new research that shows a natural compound found in the peel of the popular fruit may help boost muscle growth, burn fat and reduce obesity.
In a study of mice, University of Iowa researchers found that ursolic acid -- a waxy substance found in apple peel – helped reduce obesity and contributed to significantly lower levels of pre-diabetes and fatty liver disease. Although the research involved mice, researchers said the findings could have significant implications for humans.
The study, published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE, demonstrated that the compound boosted the amount of muscle and brown fat -- two tissues recognized for their calorie-burning properties – in mice given supplements of ursolic acid as part of a high-fat diet.
"Since muscle is very good at burning calories, the increased muscle in ursolic acid-treated mice may be sufficient to explain how ursolic acid reduces obesity,” said lead researcher Dr. Christopher Adams. “However, we were surprised to find that ursolic acid also increased brown fat, a fantastic calorie burner. This increase in brown fat may also help protect against obesity."
Researchers once believed that only infants had brown fat, which studies have linked to lower levels of obesity and healthier levels of blood sugar and cholesterol.
The Iowa study was funded, in part, by the National Institutes of Health.
