Which Weight-Loss Supplements Really Work?

By    |   Monday, 21 July 2014 07:44 AM

We’ve all been bombarded with pitches for weight-loss supplements – pills, potions, or powders that promise to help slim you down.

Of course, the claims of many diet aids are overblown. But ConsumerLab.com, an independent health and nutrition product evaluator, recently analyzed weight-loss supplements and found that a few are back by solid research showing that they are indeed effective.

For the most part, the products do not induce dramatic changes in weight, but they can lead to losses on the order of one to three pounds a month, Tod Cooperman, M.D., president of ConsumerLab.com, tells Newsmax Health.

JJ Virgin, nutritionist and author of The New York Times bestseller, The Virgin Diet Cookbook, says that certain supplements do make it easier to shed weight.

“Don’t expect miracles, but combined with an intelligent diet, eliminating food intolerances, optimal sleep, and stress control, these fat-loss aids may nudge the scale in your favor,” she says.

Garcinia cambogia extract. Garcinia is a small, pumpkin-shaped fruit indigenous to Indonesia. In some villages in Malaysia, it’s made into a soup used to quell the appetite. The natural extract is called hydroxycitric acid, or HCA. Researchers claim that HCA can double or triple one’s weight loss in two ways: It helps block fat and suppresses appetite. “Garcinia seems to be more effective for women than men,” Dr. Cooperman says.

CLA. Virgin says that conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, can help decrease body fat mass while increasing lean body mass. In one landmark study, a group of overweight women lost 9 percent body fat in one year without changing their lifestyle or eating habits. Scandinavian researcher Jean-Michel Gaullier published these results in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and says that it’s important to buy a product with 80 percent concentration of CLA for best results.

Green tea extract. Virgin says this widely available supplement can boost the body’s fat-burning ability. Aside from fighting heart disease, cancer, and other diseases, drinking green tea also fights excess weight. A new study reveals that people who drank a bottle of tea fortified with green tea extract every day for three months lost more body fat than those who drank a bottle of regular oolong tea. Not only do the catechins in green tea help burn calories, they lower undesirable LDL cholesterol.

Green coffee bean extract. This excellent supplement prevents fat accumulation and promotes fat loss, experts say. The Dr. Oz Show conducted a large study on green coffee bean extract, enlisting 100 women between 35 and 49 who were overweight. The women took 400-mg capsules of the product before meals and lost an average of two pounds in two weeks without changing their diet or exercising more. Experts say that when looking for green coffee bean extract, make sure it contains at least 45 percent chlorogenic acid extract (CGA).

Coconut oil. It has been associated with reduction of belly fat. One study found that people who consumed two tablespoons of coconut oil daily for 12 weeks had lowered amounts of abdominal fat, a type of fat that’s difficult to lose and contributes to heart and other health problems.

Vitamin D. Tara Gidus, dietitian for the Orlando Magic basketball team, tells Newsmax Health that the “sunshine vitamin” is an effective weight-loss aid. “Vitamin D has multiple physiological functions beyond its classically recognized role in calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism,” she says. “Vitamin D receptors are found in more than 30 cell types and one of these affects weight loss.” A recent study showed that women given vitamin D supplements and put on a diet and exercise program lost 19 pounds in a year. Women on the same program taking a placebo lost only 12 pounds.
