Should smokers who light up while driving with a child in the car be fined? Some Ohio lawmakers say the answer is yes.

A proposed state law could make smoking in a vehicle with children under the age of 6 illegal, subject to a hefty fine.

First-time offenders could be slapped with a $500 ticket, NBC affiliate WLWT reports. Each subsequent violation could mean an additional $750 fine.

Several other states have considered similar laws.
