Cancer is on trajectory to overtake heart disease as the nation’s top killer, already supplanting heart disease as the leading cause of death in many states.

But a handful of healthy habits and lifestyle changes can greatly reduce your risk of developing the “Big C,” experts note.

“Looking at the rising prevalence of cancer holistically, you have to consider environmental factors, genetic factors, dietary factors, and lifestyle factors,” says naturopathic physician AnnAlisa Behling.

“Some things may be beyond your control, but there’s a lot you can do to help yourself stay healthy.”

Here are 10 simple ways Behling and other experts say you can improve your odds of dodging the cancer bullet:

  1. Drink filtered water: “I can’t say enough about drinking purified water,” Behling tells Newsmax Health. Alarmingly, the stuff coming out of your tap may be contaminated with carcinogens including toxins, heavy metals, and chemicals. Tests show that bottled water can be just as bad. The best option is to purify your H2O with a reverse osmosis filtration system.
  2. Marinate meat: Cooking meat and fish at high heat – such as grilling over an open flame – creates carcinogenic chemicals. But you can significantly reduce their development by marinating the meat beforehand. Behling suggests an acidic marinade based in vinegar, wine or citrus, which will also help to tenderize the meat. Using the herb rosemary, garlic, and onion will enhance the marinade’s benefits.
  3. Avoid fragrances: This actually may not be so simple, since so many products – perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, lotions, fabric softeners, and much more – contain artificial fragrances. Some of the chemicals that make the sweet aromas are carcinogenic or endocrine disruptors that can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. Check labels, and anything that contains “fragrances” is best left on the shelf. If you can’t give up perfume, Behling suggests spraying it on your clothing, not your skin.
  4. Sunbathe: A few minutes of sunshine during peak hours, generally 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., each day will boost vitamin D levels in your body. A deficiency in the sunshine vitamin has been linked to several types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, colon, stomach, and prostate. But don’t stay out in the sun unprotected too long or you’ll increase your risk of skin cancer. Many experts suggest bolstering your vitamin D levels with a supplement.
  5. Eat resistant starch: Found in many legumes, green bananas, cashews, and chilled potato and pasta salads, resistant starch is impossible for our bodies to digest. But the beneficial bacteria in our microbiome thrive on it and produce butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that inhibits tumor growth, particularly in the colon.
  6. Munch Brazil nuts: These tasty treats are the best natural sources of the trace mineral selenium. In an eye-opening 5-year study, researchers at Cornell University and the University of Arizona found that 200 micrograms of selenium daily – the amount contained in just two Brazil nuts – resulted in a 39 percent reduction in cancer deaths in individuals studied. Be sure to get selenium from food because supplements actually increase risk of prostate cancer.
  7. Skip the dry cleaner: Perchloroethylene (PERC) is a solvent that 85 percent of all dry cleaners use, and the National Academy of Sciences calls it a “likely carcinogen.” Exposure or inhalation is thought to raise risk of kidney and liver cancer. If you do dry clean clothing, Behling says you should remove the plastic covering to let it air out before wearing.
  8. Kill the nightlight: Studies show that even low levels of light at night can disrupt the circadian rhythm (our natural wake-sleep cycle) and increase risk of hormonal-triggered cancers such as breast and prostate. Keep your bedroom as dark as possible or wear a sleeping mask.
  9. Drink green tea: “I’m a huge green tea fan,” says Behling, a board member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. “It has a lot of polyphenols and catechins, which studies show help with cancer prevention.” She recommends brewing your own and drinking at least four 8-ounce glasses of it a day.
  10. Limit cell phone use: The jury’s still out on whether cell phone radiation can contribute to cancers of the head and brain, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Experts say to keep your cell phone at least six inches away from your body, and use the speaker or hands-free devices when making calls.
