Simple Ways to Avoid Hair Loss

Monday, 31 December 2012 12:01 PM

Sure, we all lose a few stray hairs every day, but if you've noticed more and more falling out in the shower or after brushing your hair, here are a few tips to stop the cycle before it gets out of the control.
When it comes to genetic hair loss, there isn't a lot you can change, but there are other factors at play. Stress, poor diet, medications, and pollution are just a few, as is subjecting your hair to abuse from hair dryers, hair dyes, and heated styling tools. Heat weakens hair proteins, regardless of the promise of shiny, soft hair — you'll wind with hair that is a lot more fragile and brittle than necessary.
MyHealthNewsDaily advises avoiding tight hairstyles, such as braids, cornrows, and ponytails, which can trigger hair loss, especially from the sides of the scalp.
Also, go easy on brushing and combing, especially when your hair is wet. Use combs with wide teeth and smooth-tipped brushes.
Frequent shampooing is bad for your hair as well. After you rinse your shampoo, apply a conditioner so your hair is easier to comb. Also don't vigorously rub your hair with a towel to dry it.
MyHealthNewsDaily also advises against hot oil hair treatments and chemicals used in permanents, which can inflame your hair follicles, which in turn causes hair loss.
Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids — such as salmon and mackerel — two or three times a week, advises Prevention magazine. Or sprinkle a tablespoon or two of freshly ground flaxseed onto your salads or cereal each day.
