Infant Formula Maker Goes GMO Free

By    |   Tuesday, 26 May 2015 01:08 PM

The maker of Similac Advance, the top commercial infant formula brand in the United States, has joined the GMO-free bandwagon.

Similac’s maker, the global health care company Abbott, says it will begin selling the first mainstream baby formula made without genetically altered ingredients by the end of the month at Target, The New York Times reports.

Abbott joins a growing number of companies offering consumer products without genetically modified organisms, amid a growing debate among scientists, food manufacturers, and consumer advocates over their benefits and potential risks.

“We listen to moms and dads, and they’ve told us they want a non-GMO option,” said Chris Calamari, general manager of Abbott’s pediatric nutrition business. “We want to make sure we meet the desires of parents.”
