Sex: A Better Headache Cure Than Drugs?

Sexual activity is more effective in treating migraines and other headaches than painkillers, according to a provocative new study out of Germany.

The research — published in Cephalalgia, the journal of the International Headache Society — is the first to offer scientific support for a serious rethinking of the long-used excuse for rejecting a lover’s advances: “Honey, I have a headache.”

To reach their conclusions, scientists from the University of Munster surveyed about 1,000 migraine and cluster-headache sufferers and found that more than half who had sex during an episode reported an improvement in symptoms. For 70 percent of the patients, sex greatly eased or virtually eliminated headache pain.

The effect was so profound that some men who suffer migraines reported regularly engaging in sexual activity to treat their headaches, they added.

“The majority of patients with migraine or cluster headache do not have sexual activity during headache attacks,” they noted. “Our data suggest, however, that sexual activity can lead to partial or complete relief of headache in some migraine and a few cluster headache patients.”

The researchers believe sex triggers the release of endorphins — natural painkillers, regulated by the central nervous system — that can reduce or eliminate a headache.
Among the specific findings:

  • About one in three migraine suffers said they had experienced sexual activity during an attack; out of these patients, 60 percent reported an improvement of their migraine attack (70 percent reported moderate to complete relief) and 33 percent reported worsening.
  • For those who suffer cluster headache, 31 percent of the patients had experience with sexual activity during an attack; out of these patients, 37 percent reported an improvement of their cluster headache attack (91 percent reported moderate to complete relief) and 50 percent reported worsening.
  • Some patients, in particular male migraine patients, even used sexual activity as a therapeutic tool.
