Attraction is about more than just looks, or at least that is what growing research is showing.

We all have a list of traits to explain why we are attracted to certain people — eyes, hair, sense of humor — but there is an element of science behind attraction that is drawing us to potential mates and it is wrapped up in primal magnetism.

We are generally unaware of all this going on when we go out to a bar, club or cafe to meet new people but, while it is unfolding subconsciously, there are certain things that make a person more appealing.

Bearing that in mind, these seven tips are a sure-fire way of being more attractive, according to science:

  1. Smile: Researchers from the University of British Columbia found that the most attractive expression a woman can have is her smile, Reader's Digest noted.  This is because femininity is typically associated with expressions of happiness.
  2. Have a sense of humor: Women are drawn to partners with a good sense of humor, at least that is what one study found. According to the report, it may boil down to a sense of humor indicating a higher intelligence.
  3. Get a pet: There may be a reason why cute puppies regularly feature in profile pics on dating apps. A science experiment proved there could be merit to this. One man was tasked with approaching 240 women, half the time with a dog, and his canine friend increased his chances of success threefold, Psychology Today noted.
  4. Wear red: The color red is linked to passion and romance but researchers found that it could also make a woman appear more attractive, Reader's Digest noted. This may be because the fiery color implied sexual receptivity.
  5. Grow a beard: Gone are the days when Hollywood actors sported clean shaven faces. Producers have latched onto the idea that women find facial hair more attractive and researchers from the University of New South Wales proved this in a study that found men with stubble, an indicator of masculinity, were more appealing.
  6. Be well groomed: We do not go out looking like a mess to meet a potential new partner. Cleaning up for a new date is just a given but researchers have figured out why attraction is based upon self-presentation, Reader's Digest noted. It boils down to "self care," which indicates that we are able to manage out health and wellbeing.
  7. Be responsible with your finances: Money might not be the main driving force behind whether or not a person is attractive but a study did show that nearly 70 percent of respondents found financial responsibility vital when choosing a dating partner.
