The Science Behind Renee Zellweger's New Face

Thursday, 23 October 2014 01:14 PM

Renee Zellweger was almost unrecognizable when she appeared at an awards ceremony earlier this week. With her slender body, unlined brow, and  obviously changed facial features, the 45-year-old star of Bridget Jones's Diary ignited a storm of interest over whether or not she had undergone cosmetic surgery. While she attributed her glowing — but altered — looks to aging and a healthy lifestyle, the changes were so dramatic that many doubted she was telling the whole story.

She could be telling the truth, or at least close to it, according to two prominent cosmetic surgeons. In an article published at Live Science, Dr. Michael C. Edwards, president of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Stuart Linder, said that Zellweger's looks appeared so different because the changes affected her most distinctive features. Two minor procedures combined with weight loss could account for her dramatically changed appearance, they said.

One of the biggest changes is in her eyes, and her heavy eyelids were a distinctive feature. "That's what made her Renee Zellweger," Dr. Edwards told Live Science. In recent pictures, her eyelids appear to contain less fat, and her brows look lower than they did in photos made last year. "The face looks fuller in the lower third, and the eyes have totally changed what they originally looked like," Dr. Linder said.

It's possible that Zellweger has had a blepharoplasty, a procedure which removes excess skin from upper eyelids and can also make the brows appear lower, according to Dr. Linder. She could also have had an inner-eyelid blepharoplasty, which removes fat from beneath lower lids. Changes in her jawline and her prominent cheekbones could have been accomplished by using cosmetic fillers.

But her longer, slimmer face could be caused by aging, accentuated by weight loss, and although her forehead could have been smoothed by using Botox, its wrinkle-free appearance could be a benefit of a healthier lifestyle, Dr. Edwards said.
