New evidence suggests pregnant women infected with the COVID-19 virus could pass the disease to their baby before he or she is born.

ABC News reported Friday that three new reports published in the Journal of the American Medical Association said earlier claims that vertical transmission of the virus was not happening might not have been accurate.

One example in Wuhan, China — the epicenter of the global outbreak — found three babies out of 33 who were born to mothers infected with COVID-19 tested positive for the virus. Doctors believe the babies got the virus before they were born because several steps were taken during the birthing process to prevent the newborn from getting sick.

The three babies in Wuhan all lived despite falling ill with the virus.

Two other research letters, according to ABC, indicated three other babies had antibodies linked to the coronavirus in their blood. They were not ill at birth, suggesting they could have contracted the virus during the pregnancy and recovered from it before birth.

The COVID-19 virus has infected nearly 600,000 people worldwide and has killed around 27,000. The U.S. has seen north of 100,000 cases and more than 1,500 deaths.
