Phyllis Diller’s Heart Disease Battle

Monday, 20 August 2012 04:21 PM

Before she died in her sleep Monday, comic Phyllis Diller had overcome a serious heart attack to continue her legendary career well into her 90s.
Diller, who was 95, had suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1999 at the age of 82. But she was fitted with a pacemaker and continued to perform her stand-up routine, which included her trademark cackling laugh and digs at her fictional husband “Fang.”
Although she routinely carried a cigarette holder during her act, she never smoked. However, she was known to enjoy a martini. Despite her longevity, she made fun of the fact that was not into exercise.
“My idea of exercise is a good, brisk sit,” she once quipped.

These 4 Things Happen Right Before a Heart Attack

Diller was a pioneer in Hollywood plastic surgery and openly discussed the many procedures she had to her face. By her count, she had at least 15 cosmetic operations.
In recent years, she suffered a series of injuries from falls, which led to declining health. In 2007 she fractured her back and had to cancel a Tonight Show appearance, during which she was planning to celebrate her 90th birthday. In the last few years, other falls had caused injuries to her wrist and hip.
She died at her home in Brentwood, Calif., while under the care of hospice nurses.
