America is in the grips of an obesity crisis. Roughly two out of three U.S. adults are considered to be overweight or obese, and this is causing serious health issues that include type 2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and even some types of cancer.

In just a decade, obesity rates for 36 states in the U.S. nearly doubled, Harvard University's School of Public Health noted. With this in mind, the personal finance site WalletHub released a report that ranked the "fattest states in America" as of 2019.

The fattest state is Mississippi, where obesity rates are soaring. Unfortunately, the issue is no longer limited to adults. According to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, nearly half of the children in the state are overweight or obese. Furthermore, many are being treated for type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol from age 8.

After Mississippi is West Virginia, which ranked second in WalletHub's list of the most obese states in America and was also listed as the least-healthy state in a separate survey.

Rounding out the top three most obese states is Kentucky, which saw obesity rates hit a historic high last year.

These findings are based upon 29 key metrics that included obesity-related health care costs, which are unsettling. In the U.S., obesity costs the healthcare system $147 billion annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Adding to this financial strain, U.S. News and World Report noted that indirect costs linked to obesity-related health issues range from $3 billion and $6.4 billion annually.

Which areas are most impacted by the epidemic?

Here’s a look at the top 10 fattest states in America, according to WalletHub:

10. Ohio

9. Delaware

8. Arkansas

7. Louisiana

6. Oklahoma

5. Alabama

4. Tennessee

3. Kentucky

2. West Virginia

1. Mississippi
