Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said he will cut off water and power to those hosting illegal house parties. This announcement comes on the heels of a deadly shooting at a mansion Monday night in which more than 200 people gathered. During the COVID-19 crisis, large gatherings of any kind have been discouraged by healthcare officials to minimize the spread of the disease.

"While we have already closed all bars and nightclubs, these large house parties have essentially become nightclubs in the hills," Garcetti said, according to Variety. “We will not act lightly but we will act."

His actions were spurred following the death of a 35-year-old woman at a party in the Hollywood Hills that left four other people injured.

Recently, a house party in New Jersey in a rented Airbnb publicly flouted the state's COVID-19 crowd guidelines with over 700 guests in attendance. It took officers five hours to disperse the crowd, according to CNN, putting many officers at risk of infection.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Garcetti pointed out the dire consequences of irresponsible gatherings.

"The consequences of these large parties ripple far beyond just those parties," he said. "They ripple throughout our entire community because the virus can quickly and easily spread."
