A tour bus guide in Japan has tested positive for coronavirus for the second time, after having been released when she recovered from the illness earlier this month.

The woman, who is in her 40s, had first tested positive in late January, but has been readmitted to a hospital after having a sore throat and chest pains, marking the first known case of a second positive test in Japan, reports Fox News.

Health Minister Katsunobu Kato has informed Japan's central government of the need to review previous patient lists while monitoring the conditions of people who have been discharged from hospitals and monitor the condition of those previously discharged, according to Reuters.

Philip Tierno Jr., professor of microbiology and pathology at the NYU School of Medicine, told Reuters that once a person has the virus infection, it can remain dormant, but if it finds its way into the lungs, it can surface.

"I'm not certain that this is not biphasic, like anthrax," Tierno said regarding questions of whether the disease can go away before reappearing. There have already been second positive tests reported in China.

Meanwhile, Tokyo officials have urged large gatherings of people to either be stopped or limited over the next two weeks, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced Thursday all schools will be closed for a month in hopes of containing the virus.

Japan's death toll for the virus is reported at eight, including four who died after traveling on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which had been docked off the country's coast. There are about 704 cases from the ship alone.

In addition, infections have been reported in more than 40 countries and regions outside mainland China, where the disease originated.

On Wednesday, more cases were detected for the first time in Pakistan, Norway, Brazil, Greece, Romania, and Algeria. Overall, more than 80,000 people have been infected and almost 2,800 have been killed, mostly in China.
