Honeysuckle Tea Effective Against Flu

By    |   Monday, 13 October 2014 02:33 PM

Traditional Chinese medicine has long hailed honeysuckle tea as a healing agent. Now scientific researchers have identified a molecule in honeysuckle that directly targets influenza A viruses, potentially offering a new way to treat the family of viruses that includes Spanish flu and avian flu.

The molecule in question, called MIR2911, was shown to repress the flu virus when given to mice, Medical News Today reports.  The team demonstrated that MIR2911 targets two specific genes that are essential for influenza viruses to replicate and spread.

In addition, the researchers found that both synthetic MIR2911 and the natural form of the molecule in honeysuckle were able to protect animals effectively from H1N1 infection, also known as Spanish flu or swine flu.

The researchers noted exponents of traditional Chinese medicine have been drinking the sweet-smelling honeysuckle tea as a form of treatment for flu, and now the research has found, "the results show that honeysuckle … has a broad-spectrum anti-viral activity."

The study was conducted by a team from Nanjing University, China, and was published in the journal Cell Research.
