The next time you sit on a toilet seat it could save your life. While that may sound preposterous, it’s the result of a high-tech advancement that enables a toilet seat to can detect heart conditions before symptoms arise by measuring heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels — all from the user's legs, The Daily Mail reported.

Scientists invented a technology-filled covering  designed to fit over a regular toilet seat. Its sensors collect vital data about the user's health and transmits the information to doctors via WiFi.

The inventors at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York are hoping to use the device to slash hospital admission rates and make it easier to monitor the health of at-risk patients from home.

Nicholas Conn, a postdoctoral fellow at the Rochester Institute of Technology. was involved in the nifty toilet seat's creation and noted that at least 25 percent of patients with congestive heart failure are readmitted into hospital within 30 days of being discharged. It has become such an issue that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has started penalizing hospitals for readmitting patients for heart failure.

Conn pointed out that the penalty for readmitting 150 patients is approximately $500,000 annually while the total cost of providing 150 patients with their own monitored toilet seats would cost $200,000. The investment would not only save lives, it could help hospital's save thousands.

"There is a pressing need to reduce the hospitalization rate of heart failure patients to limit rising health care costs and improve outcomes," the inventors wrote in a report in the journal JMIR mHealth.

This smart toilet seat has the potential to dramatically cut the burden that heart failure and cardiovascular disease play on the health care system but more importantly, it will ultimately improve the overall quality of life for patients.”
