The solution to achieving permanent weight loss and optimum health won't be found in another fad diet. A leading expert and celebrity trainer says the secret to success in all areas of your life — including your physical health — is found between your ears.

That's the principle behind Joel Harper's new book "Mind Your Body," which promises to quadruple weight loss, maximize workouts by 85%, and boost happiness and energy levels by 40% in just four weeks.

"You need to tap into the power of your mind," says Harper, who trained Dr. Mehmet Oz and his family. "In my decades as a fitness expert, I've seen powerful transformations and personal breakthroughs. But I have also seen folks throw in the towel time and time again. I wanted to find out what makes some people successful in achieving their goals while others fall through the cracks."

Harper examined cutting edge research in the fields of neuroscience and neuropsychology to uncover the reasons why some people repeatedly struggle with excess weight.

He found that these people shared similar mental patterns that set themselves up for failure, such as destructive self-talk, negative thinking patterns, and excessive mental static.

The people who consistently achieved their goals also shared similar mental patterns — but those patterns were positive and constructive.

Here are Harper's top 10 traits shared by healthy, successful people. And they apply to all categories of our lives.

  1. Shut out noise. People who are able to focus on the task at hand without distraction are able to work out more efficiently. "I have some clients try to distract me by telling jokes," Harper says. "Others are thinking about what happened before or what they'll be doing next. You need to stay present in everything you do."
  2. Know what is important, and prioritize. "I want people to learn to listen to their own bodies and not compare themselves with anyone else," says Harper. "Do I want to lose belly fat, get into a smaller dress size? What's important to me?"
  3. Be a problem solver. A person who cultivates grit and is willing to try again and again no matter what obstacles are thrown in his or her way is usually successful. "You need to be consistent. My program requires only 15 minutes of daily exercise, so there's no excuse to skip days."
  4. Set specific intentions. Create a clear path of what you want to achieve. Write down detailed daily goals and include your feelings. "I feel sexy when I work out," is an example of a feel-good emotion that can keep you on track.
  5. Visualize success. Use mental images to get a crystal-clear picture of exactly what you want out of life. But be realistic: pasting a magazine image of a 6-foot body builder on your vision board won't be helpful if you're 5-foot-5.
  6. Be organized. One of the biggest problems we have today is that we've got too many choices, says Harper. Streamline your life. When you are not overwhelmed, you can make mindful decisions. This is especially important for your food plan. Keep only healthy options on hand
  7. Apply discipline. Have the tenacity to stick to your goals and avoid the usual escape routes. Be intense about and fired up for what you want.
  8. Yield to traffic. While discipline is crucial in achieving your goals, it's also important to know when to let go and have grace under pressure. If your friends are going out to dinner when you've planned a workout, be ready to make adjustments. You need to enjoy life.
  9. Believe it, become it. Truly believe that you can do whatever you set your mind to. This principle applies not only to your physical transformation, but also to creating a happier mindset.
  10. Jump for joy. Recognize your accomplishments and celebrate each victory. "Reward yourself with a massage or spa treatment," says Harper. "[But] don't use food as a reward for all your hard work. Change your mindset to recognize food as just fuel for the body. Take the time to relax and reinforce yourself for the next goal."
