When Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” he may not have had erectile dysfunction in mind but the same principle applies, according to Prostate.net.

Certain foods possess qualities that can be helpful in managing ED, and should be used along with other methods to address this common sexual challenge.

  1. Beets. Drinking beet juice has been associated with improving blood pressure by improving the dilation of blood vessels. This same mechanism helps reduce oxygen uptake, which in turn enhances sexual stamina. You can make your own beet juice or use supplements.
  2. Chili peppers. These hot peppers can add spice to the bedroom. The active ingredient, capsaicin, helps relax your arteries and increase blood flow to the muscles, heart and other organs, including the penis. There is also evidence that capsaicin can improve exercise performance and fatigue.
  3. Cruciferous vegetables. Veggies like broccoli, kale, cauliflower and cabbage are among the most overall healthful foods you can eat, but they also boost levels of testosterone. Cruciferous vegetables contain phytonutrients that help block the production of estradiol which is associated with low levels of testosterone. Aim for two servings daily.
  4. Dark chocolate. Yet another benefit of this delicious food is that dark chocolate contains flavonoids that help lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol, both of which improve blood circulation. If ED is caused by poor circulation, chocolate may help. Be sure to purchase dark chocolate that is at least 70 percent cocoa to reap the most benefit.
  5. Mussels. Mussels are a must for men over 40, according to a University of Naples study that showed foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like mussels, boost endothelial nitric oxide production which is critical for men’s sex drive.
  6. Go nuts. Eating nuts, especially a handful of raw, unsalted nuts like Brazil nuts, helps elevate testosterone levels because they are a powerhouse of magnesium. Researchers have reported a link between men with low levels of magnesium and testosterone deficiency. Nuts are also high in the amino acid L-arginine, which stimulates the production of nitric acid, a substance that enhances blood flow to the penis.
  7. Pomegranates. Adding pomegranate juice to your daily diet can boost your testosterone levels according to scientific studies. In one study of 58 men who drank a glass of pomegranate juice every day for two weeks, the subjects experienced a rise in testosterone between 16 and 30 percent. They also reported improved mood and a drop-in blood pressure.
  8. Spinach. It looks like Popeye had no worries in the bedroom according to research. This popular leafy green contains L-arginine which converts to nitric oxide in the body and helps support a healthy erection. A Canadian team of researchers also found that eating spinach decreased arterial stiffness and improved blood pressure. The found that “consuming vegetables like spinach is an effective way to maintain cardiovascular health,” which is intimately associated with erectile function.
