Researchers Working on Flu Shot You Don't Have to Get Every Year

Researchers have administered the first shot of a new experimental flu vaccine that could last for multiple flu seasons and protect against every strain of the virus, CNN reports.

"Even on a good year, the effectiveness of the vaccine is about 60%. On a bad year, it's as low as 10%," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which is a part of the National Institutes of Health. "And there's a reason for that."

Current flu shots only protect against three or four strains of the virus, which changes frequently, and scientists can only make an educated guess as to which strains to guard against.

"Flu is really scary and tricky," said Dr. Julie Ledgerwood, who is leading the clinical trials program at the NIAID’s Vaccine Research Center, which is one of multiple U.S. participants in the vaccine trial.

Doctors at the NIH began testing the new universal flu vaccine last spring on several human volunteers. One of the first to receive the shot, Michael Sonn, told CNN that he has a personal reason for volunteering.

"I have a personal connection to the flu," he said. "My grandfather was orphaned due to the flu epidemic in April 1919."

Fauci said that "probably by the end of 2019, or the first quarter of 2020, we'll start to get results to see is it safe, and does it induce the kind of response that really is broad and covers multiple strains.”
