While most airlines require passengers to don face masks, Qatar Airways has gone one step further. The Middle East carrier insists travelers wear both a face covering and a face shield while on board their aircraft.

According to CNN, Qatar said it would issue protection kits for fliers that include face shields, hand sanitizer, a surgical face mask, and disposable gloves before they board. The face shields, which are also disposable, come in two sizes: one for adults and one for children over two years of age.

While the shields are mandatory for those traveling in economy, unless they are eating or drinking, travelers in first class can "wear the shield at their own discretion as they enjoy more space and privacy," said the airline, according to CNN.

"Anyone refusing to wear the face shield during the boarding process will not be allowed to travel," a spokesperson for Qatar Airways told CNN. Cabin crew will wear disposable protective gowns over their uniforms as well as safely glasses, gloves and a mask.

According to Forbes, U.S. airlines are threatening to penalize passengers who do not wear masks on board. Airlines for America, an industry group, said its members are getting serious about enforcing mask policies. The new rules say both crew and passengers must wear
"facial coverings over their nose and mouth," in order to reduce the risk of infection from the coronavirus. Failure to comply can result in suspension of flying privileges or banning passengers from flying.
