There are many ways for Americans to protect themselves from contracting coronavirus, but the one thing they shouldn't be doing is buying masks, Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said Monday.

"Folks who don't know how to wear them properly touch their faces a lot and actually can increase the spread of coronavirus," Adams told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "You can increase your risk of getting it by wearing a mask if you are not a healthcare provider."

Adams' warning came after he issued a warning through Twitter Sunday night. He said Monday that as a healthcare provider, he has to get fit-tested for a mask, which does not happen with people in the general public.

"It's important for folks to know right now, their risk remains low," said Adams. "There are things they can do to stay safe and things they shouldn't be doing."

"You can clean your hands frequently for 15-20 seconds (at a time)," said Adams. "You can cover your cough when you are sneezing, and take social precautions like staying home when you are sick or staying away from people who are sick."

Such precautions also help the spread of the flu, "which has killed 18,000 people in this country," said Adams. "I remain convinced that more people die from the flu than from coronavirus not only in our country but across the planet."

He added that with the new deaths being reported over the weekend, it's understandable for Americans to become afraid, but the United States has been through similar situations with H1N1 and SARS, but the United States has an "all-star" team of experts working on the disease.

It's also important for people to know that most of those who get sick will have a mild illness, said Adams.

"The original 14 people who were diagnosed with coronavirus in the U.S. all are recovered or are recovering, so, again, most folks are going to have a mild illness," said Adams.
