Type 2 diabetes and heart disease can be diagnosed by simply shining a special light on your skin, researchers have learned.

Scientists from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands discovered that people with a higher level of certain proteins in their bodies had a greater risk of developing these two conditions and suffer premature death.

The proteins, called AGEs, are linked to high blood sugar, arterial wall stiffness and elevated blood pressure levels according to an article published in the Daily Mail.

AGEs reflect fluorescent light and can be picked up by illuminating the skin instead of having to rely on drawing painful blood samples. The study involved 72,880 healthy participants who whose skin was illuminated with a handheld device that determined the wavelength of the light that was reflected back.

After four years, follow-up reports showed that 1,056 of the participants developed type 2 diabetes, while 1,258 were diagnosed with heart disease and 928 died. Comparative results from the original data showed that AGE levels were higher in those who developed diabetes or heart disease as well as those who died. Incredibly, elevated AGEs were associated with a whopping fivefold increase in the participants risk of death during the follow-up.

Researchers, led by Professor Bruce Wolfenbüttel, believe that the quick, non-invasive nature of the test means it can be carried out in non-medical settings such as supermarkets, pharmacies and drug stores thus alerting more of the populations of their risk factors for these two potentially deadly conditions.

Critics argue, however, that blood tests are still essential when diagnosing type 2 diabetes and that the light devices may misdiagnose healthy people who may then take drugs unnecessarily.

However, the breakthrough may indeed be helpful in bringing awareness to those at risk, say experts. Diabetes and heart disease have been linked to obesity so those who have high levels of AGEs may turn to lifestyle factors that can stave off the onset of these diseases.

“This is a spectacular tool that every doctor should have,” Dr. Gabe Mirkin, author of “The Healthy Heart Miracle,” tells Newsmax. “Once a person has a high level of AGEs he or she is at immediate risk of a fatal heart attack and should take steps to intervene.”

Over 30 million Americans suffer from diabetes and it’s the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association accounts for 1 in 3 deaths in the U.S. annually and remains the number 1 cause of death in this country.

“By shining a light on the AGEs you will know whether or not you’re headed in dangerous direction can get help before you reach that cliff,” says Mirkin.
