Mixing These Drugs Can Be Deadly

Monday, 05 May 2014 04:55 PM

More than one in four Americans take at least two prescription medicines, federal health statistics show. But many don't realize certain drug combinations can be deadly.

Fox News reports that you should always ask your doctor before mixing any drug combination. Here are four common drug combinations that can be lethal:

SSRI antidepressants and opioidspainkillers: Some antidepressants work by increasing brain levels of the mood-boosting hormone serotonin. Certain painkillers can have the same effect, which can lead to agitation, high body temperature, and rapid heart and breathing rates.

Opioid painkillers and benzodiazepine anti-anxiety meds: Both types of drugs act as depressants, but when taken together can lower heart and breathing rates to dangerous levels.

Cholesterol-lowering statins and the antifungal drug Fluconazole: Taking these two meds together can cause muscle weakness andkidney damage.

Opioids plus benzodiazepines and the muscle relaxant Carisoprodol: Most M.D.s know this combo is deadly, but a patient may still be taking all three if they are prescribed unknowingly by different doctors.
