7 Everyday Habits That Make You Look Older

Everyone wants to look younger than their actual age, but many of us have daily habits that are adding years to our faces and bodies. "Little habits we may not even think of as being bad for us — either on the inside or outside of our bodies — can make us look much older," says Dr. Erika Schwartz, chief medical officer at the Age Management Institute in New York City.
 
For instance, if you've always ended your day with a cocktail, you may need to drop that habit as you age. "You can't eat some of the things you ate and drank when you were younger because your liver can't process them," Dr. Schwartz tells Newsmax Health. "If you drink alcohol, you're likely to have bags under your eyes. You can try to get rid of them by using expensive creams and lasers, but if you just drink less alcohol and drink more water and get more sleep, they'll go away."
 
Here's a list of six more habits that may be aging you:
 
Over-exercising. "People either over-exercise or do the same exercise for a long time," says Dr. Schwartz. "People who jog or run a lot are good examples. Eventually, parts of your body that you're exercising too much — your hips, knees, and ankles — are worn down, and you look older because the parts of your body that you aren't exercising are falling apart."
 
Drinking through a straw. You use the same muscles when you drink through a straw that are used when puffing on a cigarette. The constant puckering will cause fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth. Avoid wrinkles by drinking directly from a glass or can.
 
Sleeping on your face or on the same side of your body. Several studies have shown that the position of your body while sleeping affects lines and wrinkles on your face. Sleeping with your face in a pillow covered with a cotton pillowcase creates friction between the pillowcase and your skin, causing collagen to break down and form lines and wrinkles. When you sleep on the same side every night, the lines around your eyes and those from your nose to mouth will be deeper on the side of your face that's pressed against the pillow. To keep wrinkles at bay, use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction, or sleep on your back.
 
Forgetting sunglasses. In addition to exposing your eyes to damaging UV light, not using sunglasses will cause you to squint, which will deepen wrinkles around your eyes.
 
Playing your iPod too loud. Most people associate hearing loss with growing older. Hearing usually deteriorates over many years and is often the result of exposure to everyday items such as iPods, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and hairdryers. To protect your hearing, keep your iPod volume low and use noise-cancelling headphones to eliminate background noises so you can lower the volume. Use earplugs when mowing, and even at the movies, concerts, and dances when the sound has been jacked up to ear-splitting volumes. One study found that as little as two hours of very loud noise can permanently damage hearing.
 
Slouching. "Sit straight," says Dr. Schwartz. "How we sit will either age us or keep us young. Sitting straight keeps your lungs open and helps you breathe better." When your body is in a hunched posture, your body doesn't function as efficiently as when you're sitting straight. In addition, slouching can lead to curvature of the spine and other health problems. It's bad for your appearance and bad for your health. "If you sit in front of a computer all day, sit up every few minutes and stretch," says Dr. Schwartz.
