These Five Things Slash Your Cancer Risk by Half

Cancer isn’t just a matter of luck or even genetics. In fact, healthy lifestyle habits can cut your risk of developing certain forms of cancer by at least 50 percent, research shows.

“Our lifestyle choices can significantly reduce a future cancer diagnosis,” Dr. Steven G. Eisenberg, a medical oncologist and cancer prevention expert tells Newsmax Health.

“Although not all cancer can be prevented, there are measures you can take to greatly reduce the risk for certain types of cancer — particularly lung and skin cancers, two of the most common.”

Here are Eisenberg’s tips “on how not to die of cancer.”

Avoid all tobacco. This includes cigarettes, cigars and smokeless tobacco. Tobacco accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths — not only lung cancer, but also head and neck, bladder and pancreatic cancers as well.

“We need to get serious on this war on cancer so use whatever resources you need to quit and never smoke another cigarette again,” says Eisenberg.

“Meditation has been shown to help you quit. Pause before you light up and take a deep breath instead. Use meditation along with all the other smoking cessation programs out there.”

Eat for life. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can greatly reduce your risk of developing cancer. “Again, we all know we should be eating more of these foods, but did you know that there are powerful cancer-fighting phytonutrients in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables? These are the powerhouses of anti-cancer diets,” says the expert.

“Eat only unprocessed foods and eliminate hot dogs and bacon that are full of cancer-causing nitrates. In fact, drop all red meat and replace it with wild salmon. Put down that doughnut and grab a veggie!”

Limit alcohol. Alcohol increases the risk of mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, breast and colon cancers. Studies reveal that women should limit their intake to one drink daily and men, two drinks. But Eisenberg recommends eliminating alcohol altogether.

“Limit, schmimit,” he says. “Stop drinking period. If you allow one, you’ll allow too much eventually. It’s just human nature.”

Be physically active. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can stave off many forms of cancer. Obesity and physical inactivity cause about 25-30 percent of the major cancers in the United States, including breast, colon, uterine, pancreas, gallbladder, kidney and esophagus cancers.

“If knowing was doing we’d all be walking around with washboard abs, 1.5 percent body fat, and the lowest cancer rates in the world,” notes Eisenberg. “But in fact, we have some of the highest.

“We sit all day and while some say that sitting is the new smoking, I say they are both linked and both bad for you. Sitting and laying about channel surfing is a huge risk factor for developing cancer.”

If you’re just starting an exercise program, start with light workouts.

“Move at all costs. You won’t go from sedentary to super athlete overnight so start slowly,” he says. “Take five minutes each day and work up to moving for 30 minutes daily. Do today only as much as you know you can do again tomorrow.”

Wear sunscreen. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed and protecting your skin from excessive sun exposure can prevent most skin cancers. Wear a sunscreen with an SPF or sun protection factor of at least 50, says Eisenberg.

“Protect yourself with sunscreen no matter what, even on cloudy days,” he advises.

Avoid the strong mid-day sun and wear the new UV protective clothing that is widely available. “Here’s where technology is very cool,” he says. “Buy these clothes and use them.”

Sunglasses help block 100 percent of harmful UV rays. Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps, too.

“Get sun only in the early morning and you will sleep better,” says Eisenberg. “However, it’s also important to get your vitamin D levels checked to make sure you are synthesizing adequate amounts of this important vitamin.”

Eisenberg adds that these lifestyle measures will not only protect your from cancer but a host of other diseases and health problems including emphysema, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and premature aging.

“It all boils down to loving yourself,” he says. “Most of us know these changes are good for us but knowing isn’t doing. Take this knowledge and actually apply it to slash your cancer risk and improve your health for yourself and your loved ones.”
