GOP Congressman, Daughter Both Fighting Skin Cancer

Thursday, 26 Jul 2012 03:23 PM

U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray and his 25-year-old daughter Briana have revealed that they are both fighting skin cancer.
The California Republican is speaking out to encourage others to take steps to prevent and detect skin cancer early. Bilbray and his daughter posted a video about their cancer battles on the website of the American Academy of Dermatology
Briana went to her doctor after noticing a mole on her skin. She was diagnosed in the spring of 2011 with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Only two weeks later, her father was diagnosed with another type of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, which was found on his lip.
Congressman Bilbray, 61, had surgery to remove the patch of cancer and further surgery to reconstruct his lip. His daughter’s condition is more serious. After having surgery and chemotherapy after her initial diagnosis, she has relapsed twice. The most recent relapse required radiation treatments, which she underwent in April.
Both father and daughter were watersport lovers and they attribute their cancers to sun exposure.
Said Briana: “The pain that I am putting my family through because of my negligence is the worst feeling in the world, and all I had to do was wear sunscreen.”
Added Rep. Bilbray: “Seeking shade, covering up, and wearing sunscreen should be priorities.”
