Beef recalled for possible contamination of plastic bits has totaled more than 17 tons, USA Today reported.

North Carolina food processor JBS USA, which supplies meat to Kroger, recalled 35,464 pounds of raw ground beef after a consumer reported finding blue, hard plastic pieces in one of the products.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service made the announcement late Wednesday noting that, while there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products, there were concerns that some of the product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers.

According to CNN, the recalled items were produced on March 22 and distributed to stores in Indiana and Virginia.

The meat carries a "EST. 34176" stamp inside the USDA mark of inspection and has been packaged under the labels Kroger Ground Beef, Private Selection Angus Beef, Kroger Ground Sirloin and All Natural Laura's Lean Beef.

FSIS urged consumers to avoid eating the meat and to instead throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.

According to Ecology Center, a Californian nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and the environmental impacts of urban residents, the adverse health effects of plastics can include direct toxicity, however, carcinogens and endocrine disruption can, over time, lead to cancers, birth defects, immune system suppression and developmental problems in children.

Amy Lusher, PhD student at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, noted that the plastic would likely leave the body in the day or two but, because the body cannot dissolve it, there is the chance that it could "get stuck" or "has a nasty effect on your body."
