Many banks closed their lobbies during the pandemic, resorting to, and even reviving drive-thru lanes. While online banking and the digital age all but buried the concept of drive-thrus, many were resurrected thanks to COVID-19.

According to The Wall Street Journal, many banks had closed down their drive-thru lanes prior to the pandemic, and experts were scrambling to get them up and running so that customers could complete their transactions in the safety and comfort of their cars when the banks closed branch lobbies.

Convergint Technologies, a company that services the largest banks, said calls to repair drive-thru equipment increased 42% in April and May compared with monthly averages in the previous months. According the Journal, the cylinders that transport cash and checks through pneumatic tubes can get stuck or crushed by careless drivers.

Forbes reported in March that brick-and-mortar banks across the country were modifying or curtailing in-person branch services. Some required that customers make an appointment to be seen in a branch. While many transactions can be done online, getting cash needs to be done via ATM or drive-thru. Some banks raised their daily ATM cash withdrawal limits and waived fees.

The drive-thru also addresses the needs of people who are “branch-centric,” said Andrew Hovet, director of Novantas, a financial services research firm. “There is still that segment of branch-centric customers who want to go to a teller. And the only one available is at the drive-thru."
